Steveston BC a Fishing Village In The Big City of Vancouver
Be Sure to Visit When the Salmon are Running
It’s hard to believe that the fishing village of Steveston is right next to the bustling metropolis of Vancouver. It’s like taking a step back in time as you walk along the docks of what is now Steveston Fish Sales Float, or fish market. Boats offering up fresh and frozen-at-sea fish from their the back of their vessels are a throwback to another era in the village’s history. Steveston was once the world’s busiest fishing port and a major center for canned salmon, shipping the product around the world. But with dwindling fish reserves and changing markets the canneries are all closed and now museum stands as a glimpse into the area’s past.
In addition to the Steveston Fish Market are the historic sites, sidewalk cafes, restaurants parks and Farmers and Artisan Markets and shops that sell a variety of merchandise.
There is more fish for sale on the weekends, but it can be bought throughout the week. Steveston Harbour Authority has additional information about the area.
